The Plank Road Station Lodge is a historic preservation project dedicated to restoring a landmark building in Winterboro, Alabama, located in Talladega County near Talladega, Sylacauga, and Childersburg. Operated as a

non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, our mission is to transform the lodge into a vibrant community center, art gallery, educational outreach facility, and local history museum.

Once restoration is complete, the lodge will serve as a gathering place for community events, regional art exhibitions, heritage programs, and cultural tourism in Alabama.

Community Events and Fundraisers

To support the restoration of this historic Alabama landmark, we have hosted a variety of community events and fundraising activities throughout the year. During the warmer months, visitors enjoyed Seasonal Market Days on the second Saturday of each month, featuring local vendors, handmade crafts, art, food, and community fellowship. Our Spring Art Show celebrated local Alabama artists and creative talent, highlighting paintings, crafts, and handmade works, while the 4th of July Smoked Boston Butt Sale served as a popular summer fundraiser featuring authentic Southern barbecue prepared by local supporters.

This year, visitors can look forward to the Annual Art Extravaganza, held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which showcases regional artists and stands as one of our largest annual fundraisers, with additional events to be announced as scheduled.

A Unique Historic Location

The Plank Road Station Lodge is located in Winterboro, Alabama, a rural community rich in history and Southern heritage. The lodge sits beside Winterboro School, one of the few remaining historic rock schools still in operation in Alabama.

Our location places us within easy reach of several communities:

  • 10 miles south of Talladega, Alabama

  • 10 miles north of Sylacauga, Alabama

  • 9 miles east of Childersburg, Alabama

Although the area is rural and lacks immediate municipal support, the lodge stands as an important piece of Talladega County history and historic architecture worth preserving for future generations.

Additional fundraising efforts occasionally include community cookbooks, donation campaigns, and special events to support the continued historic restoration of the Plank Road Station Lodge.

History

Built near the intersection of Alabama Highways 21 and 76, the Winterboro Masonic Lodge stood at the northern end of the historic Central Plank Road, a 60-mile wooden toll road from the 1850s.
After Masonic meetings ended in 1957, the building was relocated and restored in 2003 by the Winterboro Educational Foundation and later named in honor of local historian A.J. Powers. More...
